Are three-quarters of social workers really emotionally and mentally exhausted?

Updated: Oct 19, 2021

Of the 211 Social Workers asked by the Social Workers Benevolent Fund in June 2021 they found that 20% have taken time off due to stress during the pandemic and 70% of responders were feeling emotionally and mentally exhausted after having to persistently working through the pandemic.

So to what extent is this reflective of other research?

Previously in November 2020 Community Care undertook a survey of 500 practitioners and found 69% of responders mental health had worsened over the preceding 12 months. Another survey of 1100 Social Workers undertaken in November 2020 and January 2021 found declining mental health over the course of the pandemic.

There is also a trend of Social Workers leaving their jobs at the moment and for me this indicates dissatisfaction with their current job stemming from a raft of issues including overwhelm. Teams are also finding it challenging to recruit good quality Social Workers which leaves the remaining staff propping up the team which can deepen that sense of overwhelm. Good supportive and empathic leadership at these times is crucial to prevent a wave of people leaving.
